While watching a news program tonight I was reminded of a pet peeve of mine. It’s the “If-you’ve-been-offended-I- apologize” apology. Yes, I have even heard this in Christian circles. Many people have been apologizing in the news lately. Some of the Vancouver rioters following the Canuck loss of the Stanley Cup tournament are coming forward to apologize (only after being caught of course), and certain celebrities and politicians who outright lie to everyone about their moral “mis-steps” and scandals that they have unloosed with their outrageous behaviour. And many of those apologies are of that simpering variety that really says very little.
Isn’t it obvious that when I say “If you were offended..” I am placing the burden of responsibility on you for being offended? It makes the offended party look like he is some kind of sissy who is hurt far too easily. We should all toughen up. That way we will not be offended!
