Westmount Park Church - Dare to be real with God

SENIORS' FELLOWSHIP GROUP

History

The Seniors' Fellowship Group was originally started by Charlie Reid as a Men's Group and gradually changed to include women. Charlie led the group for a number of years and in December 1993, Ken and Magda Davey took on this special ministry with grateful thanks to Charlie for his leading. Since then, the Seniors Group has grown to become an outreach for those outside of our Westmount Family and we also have had people from our Craft Corner program join us, as well as friends of Westmounters.

General Information

We meet once a month from September to May, and include all kinds of activities. Our trips are often planned for months with pleasant weather, and always include lunch at a restaurant. During the winter months (January, February and March), we generally have a lunch at a restaurant and then return to the church for a film or to hear a special speaker.

We welcome anyone of any age who wishes to join us, whether or not they belong to Westmount Park Church. We feel strongly that the Seniors' Fellowship Group is an outreach to all, so that we can all share in the love and blessings of our Lord.

Costs

The costs for most of our activities are minimal; we ask only that any non-Seniors who wish to join us pay adult fees as necessary.

Past Activities & Speakers

Since 1993, the group has visited 49 different art galleries and museums, such as the Toronto Aiport Museum, taken a boat trip on the Grand River, and travelled to places like Lancaster, PA, St. Jacobs and Kingston, Ontario. We hope to return to Lancaster this coming September. We have also had the pleasure, in years past, of having a potluck picnic at Charlie and Fern Reid's cottage.

Since November 2000, the group has gone to Kitchener to help with the Samaritan's Purse Shoebox effort. We have a great afternoon helping to expedite the sending of the Shoeboxes which many other churches and groups fill up and send to Kitchener. Some of us check the monies and contents of the boxes, while others help prepare bags of candies, labels and other items needed for this project.

In the last two years, we have had two "long" trips in September. The first was back to Pennsylvania - Amish country to see the play "Ruth", and the second was a three-day trip to Sault Ste. Marie and the Agawa Canyon train trip.

We have heard from a variety of speakers, including a Paramedic, two Policemen (one speaking about safety in the home, and the other about community work with ethnic groups), representatives from the Canadian Blind Mission, CNIB, the Toronto Libraries, the Bank of Nova Scotia on "scams", Guide Dog Trainers for the blind, deaf or handicapped, Partner's International, a semi driver, a soldier speaking about the ice clearance in Ontario and Quebec after the 1998 ice storm, and many others.
